How to get well known on youtube?

Ok so I'm thinking to make an attempt and try to get well known on youtube. It would be me and my cousin. But we were thinking of just doing remakes of popular videos, for example, Nigahiga. We would do remakes of their videos and try to get maybe a few thousand views. We would give full credit to them. But it would be our little remake. What do you think of this idea? Could it work? If not, suggest another example please.
