Is it legal to make a remake of a song?

like, how magic by selena gomez was a remake. i was wondering if i could take an old song like, IDK maybe something from the 80's, and re sing it with more of a beat. not like remix it, but remake it with more of a beat. i wouldn't sell it, just for fun and for a talent competition at my school next year.
